Toss sugar, pineapple juice, vinegar, and salt into a big sturdy pot. Heat until it starts to simmer gently.

Mix in your chili flakes, chopped garlic, and tomato sauce. Let everything bubble on medium heat for around 5 minutes.

Turn down the heat. Slowly pour in your cornstarch-water mix while stirring constantly to avoid clumps forming.

Keep it on low heat, giving it a stir now and then until it's as thick as you want. Don't worry if it seems thin, it'll get thicker as it cools down.
